Alfred University men’s tennis team shades Nazareth

Box Score
PITTSFORD, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team moved closer to a berth in the Empire 8 Conference championships with a 5-4 victory at Nazareth College Tuesday afternoon.

AU won its seventh straight match to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 play. The Saxons got singles wins from junior Connor Doud (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in first singles; freshman Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in fourth singles; and junior Patrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean), 6-3, 7-6 in sixth doubles. Brown's win clinched the win for the Saxons.

AU took two of three doubles matches. Doud and Volz won first doubles, 8-6, while senior Michael Graham (Elmira, NY/Southside) and sophomore Evan Haskins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) won second doubles, 8-6.

Wins by AU in its two weekend E8 matches – home Saturday at 10 a.m. against Stevens or home Sunday at 1 p.m. against Hartwick – would give the Saxons a bid to the conference championship tournament for a second straight year. If AU wins one of those matches, the Saxons would still clinch a bid to the tournament with one loss by Elmira (3-3 E8), which plays Utica and Nazareth this weekend..
