ALFRED, NY – Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), a sophomore third baseman on the Alfred University softball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.

Thompson was honored for her play in four doubleheaders last week, in which the Saxons went 7-1. The Saxons swept non-league opponents Hilbert and at Penn College before going 3-1 in a pair of road Empire 8 contests, sweeping Elmira and splitting with Stevens.

In the eight games, Thompson batted .567 (17-for-30) with seven homeruns, 17 runs scored and 17 RBIs. In the Saxons' 7-2 win at Stevens on Sunday, Thompson belted three solo homeruns, tying the school's single-game record set in 2009 by Karen Folts. In a win at Elmira Friday, she hit her sixth triple of the year, which broke a school single-season record. It was the eight triple of her career, which ties a school record.

For the season, Thompson leads the Empire 8 in batting (.557), runs (41), hits (49), triples (six), on-base percentage (.562), slugging percentage (1.023) and stolen bases (15), and is second in homeruns (eight) and RBIs (35). It marks the second time in three weeks Thompson has been named Empire 8 Player of the Week.

AU is 25-3 overall and sits atop the Empire 8 standings with a 7-1 league mark. The Saxons, ranked 23^rd in the latest NFCA Division III poll, are in action next on Tuesday, April 21, when the Saxons plays an Empire 8 doubleheader at Nazareth.
