ALFRED, NY –
Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda), a senior pitcher-first baseman on the Alfred University softball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.
Wickwire was honored for her play in two Empire 8 home doubleheaders last week, in which the Saxons went 4-0 with sweeps of Utica and Ithaca. For the two games, she hit .500 (4-for-8) with a four homeruns (two grand slams), six runs scored and 10 RBIs.
Wickwire hit three homers, including a grand slam, in the Utica doubleheader, which AU swept by scores of 6-5 and 8-7, both in eight innings. She also hit a grand slam in the Saxons' 11-3 five-inning win in the opening game of the Ithaca doubleheader.
Wickwire also earned complete-game pitching wins in the openers of both doubleheaders, striking out a total of 10 batters.
AU (18-2 overall) is 4-0 in Empire 8 play, which places the Saxons alone atop the conference standings. Alfred plays this afternoon (Monday, April 13) in a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader against visiting Hilbert.
