ALFRED, NY —
Isiah Young (Groton, NY/Groton), a senior tight end on the Alfred University football team, has been drafted to play for the Buffalo Lightning of the American Indoor Football (AIF) league.
Young was chosen 23
rd overall by the Lightning, a first-year franchise in the nine-team AIF. The AIF draft was held Tuesday, Feb. 24 and Young was the Lightning's third pick in the 28-player draft. The Lightning also chose Morrisville State quarterback Lemar Johnson (seventh) and Lincoln University offensive lineman Jerry Johnson (10
th).
Young was a First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star in 2014, when he had 43 catches (most on the team) for 491 yards, both tops among Empire 8 tight ends, and two touchdowns. He was also named a First Team USA College Football All-American. He was a Second Team Empire 8 all-star as a junior in 2013.
American Indoor Football was founded in 2006 and played its first season the following year. In addition to Buffalo, other franchises in the league are: the ASI Panthers, York Capitals, Saginaw Sting, Chicago Blitz, Atlanta Sharks, Cleveland Saints, Washington Eagles, and Savannah Steam. The 2015 season opens March 20, but Buffalo has a Week One bye before opening March 29 at Chicago.
