FREDONIA, NY—The Alfred University Saxons (8-1-2, E8 2-0-1) earned their second shutout on the road, 1-0, Tuesday evening against SUNY Fredonia.
Â
Junior
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) paced AU on offense, taking seven shots and scoring the lone goal in the game in the 24
th minute. Lander took advantage of a rebound off the keeper and rocketed the shot into the lower right corner of the net.Â
Â
The Saxons were limited on offense for the remainder of the half only putting two more shots on goal. However, the AU defense was steadfast not allowing the Blue Devils a single shot on goal in the first half. Heading into half time the Saxons held a 1-0 lead.
Â
Once again, Lander was the primary force on offense in the second half, putting two more shots on goal in the 51
st and 56
th minutes. However, Fredonia had the most promising opportunity in the second half by way of a penalty kick in the 75
th minute. As Fredonia's Ryan Keller came to the line, sophomore
Christopher Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) stared down his opponent. As Keller ripped the shot, Gutierrez masterfully moved to the ball and parried the shot away. The AU keeper was needed again only seconds later to make his second stop of the night to keep the Blue Devils off the board.
Â
Junior
Graeme Corrigan (Troy, NY/Troy) and sophomore
Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezueal/Franklinville) supplemented Lander on offense with two shots on goal and one shot on goal, respectively. Gutierrez played the entire game in goal for the Saxons, making two stops and notching his fifth shutout of the season.
Â
The Saxons return home on Saturday to take on Empire 8 opponent Stevens Tech at 3PM. The matchup will be the first time the two teams have met since going into PK's during the Empire 8 tournament in 2014 where the Saxons fell, 6-5.
