Play of the WeekALFRED, NY—Sophomore
Cody Cronmiller's
(Livonia, NY/Livonia) late goal was not enough to help the Saxons (8-2-1, E8 2-1-1) against Stevens Tech as they fall, 2-1, at home.
The Ducks grabbed an early lead in the 21
st minute on a wild goal. Carson Pryor carried the ball into the AU defensive third and as he approached the flank sophomore keeper
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) charged and Pryor lifted a soft shot over his head. The ball bounced toward the net as the AU defense attempted to track it down before it crossed the line to no avail. Stevens carried the 1-0 advantage into the half.
The Ducks scored first in the second stanza as well on a low cross sent to Patrick Masur who crushed the shot into the open net. However, the Saxons looked to mount a comeback in the 69
th minute. Cronmiller rocketed a volleyed shot past the opposing keeper when sophomore
Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/Franklinville) crossed the ball into the box from the right flank. The Saxons were unable to put another shot on goal for the remainder of the game.
Gutierrez played the entire game in goal for AU, making nine saves—tying his season high.
The Saxons remain idle until next Saturday when they take on Utica College at home at 1PM.
