Men's soccer downs Utica with clean sheet, 3-0

YouTube Recap | Play of the Week

ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University Saxons men's soccer (9-2-2, E8 3-1-1) team returned to winning form Saturday, topping Utica College, 3-0.

The Saxons were determined to post their third Empire 8 win of the 2015 season coming into Saturday's game, and took advantage of defensive miscues and a red card on Utica to grab the lead in the 54th minute.  Junior Aidan Calkins (Oakland, ME/Messalonske) facilitated the first goal when he carried the ball to the end line and crossed the ball across the goal mouth.  Utica's defense attempted to clear the ball but kicked it straight into the back of the net for an own goal.

The second goal for AU was soon to follow in the 56th minute on a penalty kick by junior James Piombino (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), his fourth goal of the season.  The PK came following a penalty in the box on freshman Alexander Tostanoski (Painted-Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post).

The Saxons added an insurance goal in the 61st minute when freshman Adam Taylor (Newton, NJ/Sussex County Technical) fired a long bouncing through ball up the middle of the field to junior Oumar Soumahoro (New York, NY/Martin Luther King).  Upon receiving the ball, Soumahoro cut the ball back to juke out the defense and buried the shot inside the right post for his ninth goal of the year – tied for third highest in the Empire 8.

Sophomore Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) played the entire game in net for AU completing his fourth shutout of the season – tied for first in the Empire 8.  He notched six saves in the game.

The Saxons return to action on Monday at home, taking on the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 3PM.
