Late First And Third Set Runs Not Enough In Volleyball 0-3 Loss To Medaille

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball dropped a non-conference match to Medaille College on Sunday afternoon in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena, 0-3.
 
With the Saxons (1-17, 0-4 Empire 8) having a reputation of having strong third set performances, it was actually the first set where the hosts presented their greatest efforts in the 23-25, 16-25, 18-25 loss. With a 24-20 Maverick lead, AU gave one last push in the first set that was keyed by senior Brianna Dudick's (Somers, NY/Somers) kill to start the 3-0 dash to make it a one-point set. Unfortunately, Lydia Penberthy of Medaille scored the final set point off a kill, closing the first set 25-23.
 
Alfred University had another great run and this time, it was in accordance to their reputation. In the third set with Medaille leading by 10 points, 23-13, a service error from the Maverick's Simmone Talford gave the Saxons an opening to put together a 5-0 run. Sophomore Jacquelynn Hicks (Greensville, NY/Greensville) had a solo block and an assisted block along side of Dudick in the Saxon spree before two Saxon errors ended the set and match.
 
Hicks had the third highest score of the match behind Talford and Susan Muldoon of Medaille's 11 points apiece. The sophomore middle blocker had 10.5 points off of five kills, four service aces, one solo block and one assisted block. She also added two digs on the day.
 
Sophomore Heather D'Andrea (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and senior Chelsea Pietrzykowski (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) each had eight and seven points, respectively to round out the top Saxon scorers. D'Andrea posted a team-high eight kills and 11 digs. Pietrzykowski had six kills, three set assists, two block assists and three digs.
 
Sophomore Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 14 set assists and one point off of her ace.
 
The Saxons will enjoy a four-day break in competitive play before they host Keuka College on Friday, October 9 at 4:00 pm in the Galanis Family Arena in non-conference action.
