Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Harrison

Saxons shocked in overtime at home, 2-1

ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer team (10-4-2, E8 3-2-1) dropped its second game in a row, falling to Houghton College 2-1 in overtime.

In the first half both the Saxons and the Highlanders had three shots on goal.  Houghton's shots all came in the first four minutes, with two shots on open net.  Senior Kevin Powers (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) stopped both shots, racking up two defensive saves.

AU answered back with shots in the 12th, 15th, and 44th minutes.  The most promising chance for the Saxons came in the 33rd minute when junior Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) dropped a poetic free kick into the box that was headed by senior Nicholas Poindexter (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) off the post and out of play.  Neither team managed a goal in the opening 45 minutes of the match.

Finally in the 59th minute, junior Graeme Corrigan (Troy, NY/Troy) ripped a powerful shot toward the goal, but teammate Omar Mohamed (Kukuma, Kenya/Edison Tech) stopped the ball with his chest, turned and wrapped a shot inside the right post past the diving keeper to break the scoreless tie.

Houghton knotted the game up again in the 67th minute when a ball was sent in from the right side and tipped by Mitch Beattie past the AU keeper.  The game would remain scoreless for the remainder of regulation.

Only 2:14 into the first overtime period Houghton's Tyler Ashley slipped a through ball into the box, hitting Beattie in stride.  Beattie quickly wrapped a soft shot around the diving keeper, ending the game, 2-1.

Sophomore Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) played 93 minutes in goal for AU, stopping three shots on goal.

AU is off until next Saturday when it takes on Ithaca College at home for Senior Day at 1PM.
