Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Harrison

Men's soccer falls 1-0 to Ithaca

ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer team (10-5-2, E8 3-3-1) dominated possession in the second half, but were unable to manage a goal in 1-0 loss to Ithaca College at Yunevich Stadium Saturday afternoon.

It seemed as though the ball remained in the Ithaca defensive third for the majority of the game, but the Bombers were able to sneak a goal past the Saxons to take a 1-0 advantage in the 32nd minute.  The goal was managed by Andrew Coburn who took advantage of a stellar corner kick by Sam Boylan.  Following the goal the Saxons had an opportunity to even the game up at one when sophomore Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia) struck a bouncing ball with venom and the ball just sailed over the crossbar.

In the second half AU created multiple chances, possessing the ball in the offensive third of the pitch.  The most promising opportunity came in the 81st minute off a free kick by Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/Franklinville).  The shot wrapped over the heads of the defensive wall and rattled off the crossbar and out of play.  The Saxons had one more chance in the 89th minute when Reyes sent a corner kick curling into the box.  After a scramble junior Aidan Calkins (Oakland, ME/Messalonskee) ripped a low shot that went just left of the post.  Soon after, time expired and the Bombers celebrated a 1-0 victory.
Sophomore Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) played 90 minutes in net for AU making seven saves.  He was most needed in the 83rd minute, making three saves in a row to keep the Saxons within striking distance.

Now the Saxons wait for the remainder of Empire 8 games to be completed in order to realize their fate within the Empire 8 championship tournament to be played November 6th and 7th at Ithaca College.
