SCHENECTADY, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer team (10-3-2, E8 3-1-1) lost in a non-conference matchup against Union College, 2-1, Wednesday evening on the road.

The Saxons got off to a quick start when junior
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) scored in the ninth minute. The goal marks Lander's 11
th of the year, measuring third in the Empire 8.

Soon after falling behind, Union knotted the game back up at one goal each in the 22
nd minute. Carl Faber scored for the Dutchmen. Each team managed one shot on goal the remainder of the half.Â

Neither team managed to put a shot on goal in the second half for nearly twenty minutes until Union's Trevor Pauline snapped the 1-1 tie to take the lead, 2-1.Â

Finally, in the 83
rd minute, Lander put a shot on goal past the Dutchmen defense. The shot was the Saxons' first since junior
James Piombino (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) put a shot on goal in the 26
th minute.Â

Union had the opportunity to put another goal on the board in the 84
th minute on PK, but sophomore keeper
Christopher Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) parried the shot away and quickly saved another shot on goal after a rebound. No shots on goal ensued down the final stretch of the game.

AU held an advantage in corner kicks 6-3. Gutierrez played the entire game in goal for the Saxons making four saves.

AU returns to Empire 8 play on Saturday when it returns home to take on Houghton College at 7PM at Yunevich Stadium.
