ALFRED, NY—The AU women's soccer team fell to the Houghton Highlanders 3-0 despite a very strong showing from freshman keeper Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South).
 
It was a very tight game in the first half as both teams had multiple chances to put the ball in the net, but were denied by solid keeper play.  The Highlanders thought they were going to pull ahead with a great chance in the 31^st minute when Nikki Garns ripped a shot from the six, but Shanahan made an incredible diving stop to keep the game deadlocked at zero.
 
However, in the second half Houghton came out with even stronger offensive play and netted three goals. 
 
Shanahan ended the game with nine saves.  AU held the advantage in corner kicks 2-1.
 
AU (3-4-1, Empire 8 0-1-0) is in action again September 27^th at Hartwick.
