ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to host Rochester this afternoon in NCAA Division III championship tournament regional play.

Facing elimination, Rochester forced a winner-take-all regional title game later at 2:30 this afternoon.

Rochester scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Saxons (29-11). Alfred plated a run in the top of the fifth, when sophomore shortstop
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) hit a two-out single to drive in sophomore second baseman
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.). Rochester closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Alfred, seeded second in the four-team regional, lost despite outhitting the top-seeded host team, 7-5. Maher finished with two hits, while Torchia, junior outfielder

Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) took the pitching loss for the Saxons, allowing four earned runs on five hits and striking out nine in six innings.

The winner of this weekend's Rochester Regional will advance to one of eight Super Regionals, May 16-17 at a site and against an opponent to be determined. The winners of the eight Super Regionals, played in best-of-three series, advance to the College World Series May 22-27 in Tyler, TX.
