ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team defeated visiting D'Youville College, 8-1, Saturday afternoon. With the non-conference win, the Saxons improved to 11-6 overall, with the 11 wins tying a school single-season record.
The Saxons took five of six singles matches. Sophomore
Connor Doud (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) won first singles, 6-2, 6-0; junior
Michael Graham (Elmira, NY/Southside) won third singles, 6-4, 6-0; senior
Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) won fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1; senior
Eric Teller (Granville, NY/Granville) took fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0; and sophomore
Matt Baloga (Goshen, NY/Goshen) won sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1.
The Saxons swept three doubles matches. Doud and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-3; Benoit and Graham took second doubles, 8-0; and Teller and freshman
Pat Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) claimed third doubles, 8-0.
AU is in action next on Tuesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
The 11 wins ties the school single-season team record also held by the 2012 squad. Nonnenmann's win Saturday was his 14
th in singles play this year, which sets a new AU single-season record. Nonnenmann, who earlier this year broke the school record for career singles wins and combined singles and doubles wins in a career, is now one off the school career record for doubles wins. He has 39, just off Nick Schneider's school record of 40.
