HOBOKEN, NJ – The Empire 8 Conference has announced the schedule for the 2014 women's tennis championship tournament, Oct. 18 and 19 at Stevens Institute of Technology.
Alfred University is seeded fourth in the four-team tournament and will take on top-seeded host team Stevens in one semifinal match, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The other semifinal, between second-seeded Ithaca and third-seeded Elmira, will be played at 2 p.m. Oct. 18. The semifinal winners will play for the Empire 8 title, and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships, on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. If Sunday's finals are moved indoors, the matches will begin at 12:30 p.m.
TOURNAMENT WEBSITEAlfred finished the season with a 5-3 Empire 8 record and qualified for the league championship tournament for the first time since the conference adopted a four-team tournament format in 2007. AU won its only Empire 8 crown in 2004, when all eight teams qualified for the championship tournament.
Top-seeded Stevens finished with an 8-0 conference record; Ithaca was 7-1 in league play; and Elmira had a 6-2 conference mark. Alfred's three conference losses came to those three teams.
Conference championship tournament matches will be played on the outdoor courts on the Stevens campus. In the event poor weather forces matches indoors, Saturday's semifinals will be played at Washington Township Tennis & Fitness Club, Washington Township, NJ, while Sunday's finals will be played at the Binghampton Racquet Club, Edgewater, NJ.
