Box Score ALFRED, NY—The Saxons suffered a tough loss to the Stevens Ducks Sunday afternoon, despite creating offensive chances.
To start the game, both the teams played a very even game maintaining the ball at midfield, neither team taking the upper hand. The Saxons looked to take the lead in the 13
th minute when freshman
Lauren Wyant (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) sent a free kick to the far post, but the ball was intercepted by the Duck keeper, Lindsey Mahnken. Then in the 16
th minute the Ducks took control scoring two goals in rapid succession pushing them up 2-0.
With ten seconds left in the half, the Ducks added to their lead with a free kick at the top of the box that was drilled to the back of the net on the far side of the goal. The Ducks would carry the 3-0 lead into the half.
The second half followed suit with the first, as Georgia Johnson added two more goals to the Duck lead on identical plays with the ball bouncing in the box and she flicked the ball over the head of the charging keeper.
However, the Saxons proved they are a second half team, trying to cut into the lead and putting three shots on goal. However, the attempts were turned away keeping the Saxons off the board. The most promising chance came in the 65
th minute when Wyant ripped a shot at the goal after streaking down the sideline to beat the defender. Junior defender,
Jasmine Ramon (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh), added another chance soon after, charging into the box. However, the Duck defenders were able to get a toe on the ball to slow it down for their keeper.
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) played 54 minutes in the goal for the Saxons recording eight saves. Senior
Alicia Hanes (Vestal, NY/Vestal) supplemented the young keeper, playing 37 minutes and recording four saves.
The Saxons (3-9-2, Empire 8 0-4-0) are in action again on the road October 18
th against Utica College.
