Women's Volleyball Drops Two Three-Set Non-Conference Losses At Houghton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of three-set losses during its Saturday morning trip to Houghton College for a tri-match between the host Highlanders (13-9, 3-3 Empire 8) and the Gators (15-9, 1-3 NCAC) of Allegheny College.

The Saxons (4-20, 0-6 Empire 8) posted strong second and third set scores against the home team, Houghton during the 10am match, falling 25-15, 25-20, 25-23 to the Highlanders.

Jacquelynn Hicks and Mary Lou Patnaude both buried seven attacks to the opponent's court each. Taylor Kiernan led the low game for the Saxons with 16 digs and was followed by Patnaude's 10. Hicks also tacked on another three points to her seven from kills with three aces, leading the team with 10 of their 28 points.

We rallied to play against Allegheny and after a slow first match start," said the Saxons' head coach. "We certainly turned it around to give Allegheny a run for their money. Our defense got stronger in the second match, which is why our offense was able to spread out more and give a stronger showing."

A consistency between both matches was setter Aubrey Totsline's assists. Totsline recorded 20 in the day's opener and added another 17 in the nightcap.

Chelsea Pietrzykowski garnered the day's high with eight kills from her 17 attacks. After a morning match that only saw two assisted blocks, Pietrzykowski stuffed two by herself while Hicks added one solo block in the afternoon showing. Five players had two kills in the second match.

Valerie Cardillo recorded 16 digs against the Gators while Kiernan added nine on the day. Cardillo also had two perfect serves for aces while Kiernan, Patnaude and Jessica Scoones added aces in the contest.

Naomi Prentice led Houghton's match with 12 kills, Anna Coryell posted 31 assists and Hannah Compeau reached for 13 digs during the morning match.

Sarah Swartz and Bailey Gawley each had eight kills in the afternoon meeting, Justine Kelly had 26 helpers and Catherine Kasianowicz led the diggers with 18.

The Saxons will next journey to Keuka Park, NY to face the Wolfpack (8-11, 7-0 NEAC) of Keuka College on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 pm.
