UTICA, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team took to the road to open Empire 8 action and defeating Utica University with a sweeping, 7-0 final score on Saturday.
"A good win today after our fight against Oneonta the day before, but we didn't take it for granted," Interim Head Coach
Bob Cilino '13 said. "Even with a strong win every player has lessons they took from this match that we can use to improve throughout the season."
The Saxons (1-1, 1-0 Empire 8) began by claiming the doubles point with three wins, giving up only three games. The No. 2 doubles team of
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) had the clean, 6-0 victory.
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and
Anastasia Shaw (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville) took the 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Alyssa Seegert (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) and
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Windisch completed the full sweep as she shutout
Andrea May at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Madsen nearly joined her with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over
Averi Kraeger at No. 2 singles. Seegert also had a clean 6-0 set shutout, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 over
Lyndsey Tiedemann.
Caitlin Bittel (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over
Hannah Slater at No. 6. Gits took home a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Epping had a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory at No. 3.
The Saxons will next host Lycoming College in non-conference action on Wednesday, September 9 at 4:00pm.
