NEW PALTZ, NY -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches in the New Paltz Challenge to end a five-match, three day weekend.
The Saxons (6-11, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to United States Merchant Marine Academy in three close sets, 18-25, 22-25, 17-25 to open Saturday's contests. Then, after a long break in play, faced the hosts and fell in three sets, 20-25, 18-25, 18-25.
Match One
Alfred University - 0 (18, 22, 17) | United States Merchant Marine Academy - 3 (25, 25, 25)
The Saxons were led by both
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) and
Abigail Omelan (Tomball, TX/Tomball Memorial) as they each scored 9.5 points. The bulk of Omelan's points came from her eight kills while adding an ace and an assisted block. Santavy totaled six kills, three aces and one block assist.
Gillian Dickerson (Frisco, TX/Wakeland) also had three aces while leading the Saxons with 13 set assists. She also tied with
Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) for a team-high eight digs.
Match Two
Alfred University - 0 (20, 18, 18) | New Paltz - 3 (25, 25, 25)
The Saxons were once again led by Santavy with 7.0 points, recording five kills and two aces. McGowan recorded 10 digs. Dickerson recorded 14 assists.
In all three sets, Alfred University kept the New Paltz scoreboard nearly even until the final points.
The Saxons will next enter Empire 8 action as they travel to St. John Fisher University on Friday, October 2 for a 6:00pm match.
