ALFRED, NY – A late first-half goal led Houghton University to a 1-0 victory over the Alfred University women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (1-3-2, 0-1-0 Empire 8) faced early pressure from the Highlanders, with
Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland) making three saves during the opening 10 minutes of play.
Ava Thayer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) recorded Alfred's first shot on goal in the 12th minute. Mott added three more saves during the remainder of the first half, but Houghton (4-2-0, 1-0-0 Empire 8) broke through in the 42nd minute following a contested play in the box to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Alfred continued to battle in the second half, with
Isabelle Dennis (Livonia, NY/Livonia) testing the Houghton defense with a free kick in the 54th minute that was saved by the Highlanders' goalkeeper. Thayer later registered the Saxons' final shot on goal, but Alfred was unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.
The Saxons will return to action on Saturday, September 19, when they travel to face St. John Fisher University at 6:00 PM.
