ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team broke the school record for single season team wins with a 4-3 road victory over Nazareth University on Saturday.
The Saxons (12-5, 6-2 Empire 8) broke the 2014-15 team record of 11 wins and is now one of only three teams to record double-digit dual-match wins in school history. "We avoided an upset against an inspired team from their senior night," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "Super proud of the guys for breaking the record for most wins in a single season with 12. Onwards and upward as we prepare for the playoffs!"
Naz got the opening point with two wins in doubles.
Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Christian) and
André López Jiménez (Mexico City, Mexico/PrepaTec Esmeralda) picked up the only victory in doubles, as they continue their impressive win streak, now at 13 in a row. López Jiménez also went on to record the match-clinching victory at No. 2 singles, defeating
Pierre Ntonga, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, making it a 4-2 lead and securing the win. Erickson earned AU's third point at No. 3 singles, defeating
Nathan Bigelow, 7-5, 6-2.
Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) was the first Saxon to record a team point when he defeated
Max Funiciello, 6-3, 6-0.
Anlun Zwerver (Koog Aan De Zaan, The Netherlands/Blaise Pascal College) earned the second point with a No. 4 singles win over
David Tuller, 6-3, 6-1.
