Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Oswego in Empire 8 Action

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team defeated Oswego State, 7-0 in Empire 8 action from the Alfred University Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Saxons (8-4, 3-1 Empire 8) swept the Lakers (2-4, 2-2 Empire 8) in singles matches and only dropped on doubles match, but with doubles counting as one point, they secured the shutout.
 
"A great result and a good battle," Head Coach Jake Fisler said. "Proud of the guys and how they rebounded, super excited to keep up this momentum as we head into the second half of the season."
 
Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) and Anlun Zwerver (Koog Aan De Zaan, The Netherlands/Blaise Pascal College) got things started with a clean, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Christian) and André López Jiménez (Mexico City, Mexico/PrepaTec Esmeralda) secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 2.
 
Zwerver was the first Saxon to pick up his second win of the day as he won, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, making it a 2-0 Saxon lead. Shortly after, his doubles partner, Alvarez Janik won, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. [Breece] Erickson earned the fourth point of the day for the team when he closed out a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. López Jiménez fifth point, playing at No. 2 singles, winning his match, 7-5, 6-1.
 
Matthew Bittel (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) picked up the next win for the Saxons, claiming a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Josh Erickson (Falconer, NY/Falconer) closed out the day and the 7-0 victory at No. 6 singles, posting a final score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
 
The Saxons will next host Houghton University in Empire 8 action on Wednesday, April 15 at 4:00pm. Wednesday's match is also their Senior Day as well as their Saxon-for-Saxon match, where fellow student-athletes are encouraged to attend and cheer on the Saxons.
