Saxons Fall in Close Road Visit to SUNY Oswego

OSWEGO, NY -- The Alfred University men's lacrosse team saw its two-game win streak come to an end with an 11-9 loss at SUNY Oswego on Saturday afternoon.

"Slow start caught up to us," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Michael Gruin (Hamburg, NY/Orchard Park) played well on offense. Ben Cunningham (Dover, MD/The Gunston School) was dominant in his defensive role."

For the second straight week, face-off specialist Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) broke another school record. After just setting the school record for most ground balls (472), he has set the record for most career face-off wins. He went 19-for-23 to get to 764 career face-off wins.

He surpassed the previous record of 762 held by Garrette Briggs '21. Briggs has a second school record he held broken within a week by Cupp. In addition to Cupp's record face-off wins, he added on 17 ground balls to extend his ground ball record.

AU fell behind early but got a quick equalizer thanks to senior midfielder Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) in the first quarter. Riley led the way for the Saxons with three goals and two assists for five points on Saturday.

He led Alfred University's offense with 10 shots, seven of them on target. Other multipoint scorers included Loewke with a goal and two assists and Gruin with a goal and two assists.

Colin Kinsley (Walden, NY/Valley Central) continued the hot start to his freshman season with a man-up goal. Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) also earned his first goal of the season with Jack Brady (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) adding on a tally of his own.

AU played from behind for most of the afternoon but got within one thanks to late tallies from Gruin and Riley with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter. However, a late insurance goal by the Lakers in the last minute was enough for them to pull away.

The Saxons will hit the road once again for a neutral-site game at the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum in Sparks, Maryland, on Tuesday at 11AM.
