LEWISTON, NY – The Alfred University men's rugby 7s team split the day in the Lt Crowe 7s Tournament, recording two wins out of four games played on Sunday.
The Saxons went 2-2 on the day, defeating SUNY Brockport 24-14 and John Carroll University 26-19. AU later fell to Springfield College, 45-5, and Providence College, 56-0, finishing 4th out 20 teams.
"We did well this weekend, and I am very proud of what we were able to achieve,"
Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo (Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa) said. "A good win against Brockport and a tough win against John Carroll showed us a glimpse of what is to come for AU Rugby. A tough loss against last year's national finalist and another to a good Providence showed us we still have learning to do. We use these lessons moving forward."
Five different Saxons delivered successful trys, with Israel-Akinbo leading the way with four.
Phillip Peterson III (Auburn, NY) followed with two recorded trys.
Eddie Hart IV (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs),
Joseph Bodley (Le Roy, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), and
Ky Simson (Brooklyn, NY/Erasmus Hall) all scored a try each.
Chevon Adriaans (Paramaribo, Suriname/SGS) also tallied four conversions on the day.
The Saxons garnered their first semi after starting their match against John Caroll University down 19-0.
"I am proud of the performance today," Head Coach Dale Russell said. "We have come a long way in a short time and keep getting better each week. Making our first semi-final is a huge step and I am looking forward to our last AQ in 2 weeks at Susquehanna."
Alfed University will next compete in the MARC Automatic Qualifier 7s Tournament next in Lewisburg, PA. It's slated for Saturday, April 11, with the time to be announced.
