ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's lacrosse team completed non-conference play with a big 15-5 win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday night.
"We dominated on face-offs due to Cupp, Krieger and Smith," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "
Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) did a nice job in transition. Great team defensive effort today. Onto Sage in a conference game!"
AU (4-3, 0-0 Empire 8) got the scoring going early on against the Roos (1-2, 0-0 SUNYAC) and never looked back. They scored the opening 10 goals of the game and left SUNY Canton scoreless after the first half of play.
AU's scoring was led by
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) with four goals and two assists. Eight of his 10 total shots were on frame, while also being credited with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Sam Crosby (Auburn, NY/Auburn) also had a hat trick of his own on top of two assists.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) managed two goals and assists. Moon was dominant on both sides of the ball with a goal and two assists. In addition, he led the Saxons in ground balls with 11, on top of two caused turnovers.
Other scorers included two goals for
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus), two goals for
Michael Gruin (Hamburg, NY/Orchard Park), and a tally off the bench for
Drew Smith (Walworth, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo). AU was dominant all evening long and allowed them to cycle in multiple different players which allowed for several different looks on both sides of the ball.
Those changes included success in the face-off circle.
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) was a perfect 14-for-14 on face-offs with nine ground balls.
Rhett Krieger (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) went 7-for-8 while
Jacob Smith (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) won his lone face-off. As a team, AU won 22-of-23 face-offs all game long.
In the crease, both netminders also saw time.
Max Sigmund (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) recorded his fourth win of the season with a five-save performance in three quarters of action. First-year goaltender
Alex Petrangelo (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) saw time in the final frame making four saves to close out the victory.
Alfred University will turn its attention to Empire 8 conference play, hosting Russell Sage College in its fourth straight game at Yunevich Stadium. Face-off on Saturday afternoon is at 1:00PM.
