HILTON HEAD, SC – The Alfred University men's tennis team closed out spring break with a 5-2 loss to Muhlenberg College on Friday.
"This was a great reminder that we can compete with teams of this caliber, which was highlighted by a massive doubles performance," Head Coach Jake Fisler said. "The guys showed true grit and were scrapping for every point on the court. This is proof that this team is headed for big things this season."
The Saxons (4-3, 0-0 Empire 8) won the doubles point against the Mules (4-2, 0-1 Centennial) to start the match. Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) and
Anlun Zwerver (Koog Aan De Zaan, The Netherlands/Blaise Pascal College) registered a 6-3 victory at No. 1. Meanwhile,
André López Jiménez (Mexico City, Mexico/PrepaTec Esmeralda) and
Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Christian) defeated their opponents, 6-2, at No. 2.
Zwerver notched the lone singles victory for AU. The graduate student lost the first set 6-0 but came from behind to take the second set, 6-2, and the third set, 10-8.
The Saxons return to campus to host their first Empire 8 match of the season against Nazareth University on Saturday, March 28, at 1:00 PM.
