HILTON HEAD, SC – The Alfred University women's tennis team opened spring break with a 6-1 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday.
"This was a dominant performance from the team," Head Coach Jake Fisler said. "The work they put in this spring is evident and I am proud of their willingness to compete. We are looking forward to building on this success tomorrow."
The Saxons (12-6, 5-3 Empire 8) started the match strong by earning the doubles point against the Nittany Lions (1-3, 0-0 United East). Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) and
Alyssa Seegert (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) registered a 6-2 win at No. 1, followed by
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) and
Anastasia Shaw (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville), who were victorious at No. 3, 6-1.
In singles, Zabihailo got things started by securing scores of 6-1, 6-0 to win at No. 1. Epping and Shaw took victories at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and No. 6 (6-1, 6-0). Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) won the first set, 7-5, before finishing out the second, 6-2, to win at No. 4.
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) found herself locked in a tie breaker in the second set at No. 5, but came out on top, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to seal the victory for AU.
The Saxons will next play Curry College on Wednesday at 12:00 PM.
