FREDONIA, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team opened up the 2026 season at Fredonia, falling by a score of 14-4 on Saturday.

The Saxons (0-1, Empire 8) were outscored by the Blue Devils (2-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) in the first three periods. Despite a challenging start, AU managed to score three goals during the second half after being held to only one in the first.

Four different Saxons scored during the contest. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) registered two points on a goal and an assist while notching a ground ball and causing a turnover. The other three goals were scored by Jessica Matson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy), and Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong).

Defensively, goalie Molly Howlett (Brockport, NY/Brockport) garnered four saves in between the pipes while posting five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Overall, the Saxons were outshot, 23-14, with 14-7 in net.

"It was good to get our first game of the season under our belts," Interim Head Coach Erin Schurr said. "Now we have a better picture of what things we need to work through and improve upon. We'll be ready to go for our next one in a week."

AU remains on the road as it heads to SUNY Morrisville for another non-conference contest on Saturday, March 7, at 1:00 PM.
