ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 Empire 8 conference win on Saturday afternoon over Nazareth University from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (7-12, 1-1 Empire 8) fell in the first set, 20-25, before winning the next three, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 over the Golden Flyers (2-11, 0-2 Empire 8). Saturday's match was the team's ninth time recording double-digit aces as the Saxons tied for third all-time for team aces in a four-set match with 17.
The Saxons were led by
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) with a match-high 21.5 points and 15 kills while tying for a match-high in aces with
Abigail Omelan (Tomball, TX/Tomball Memorial) as each had five. Santavy added three block assists, two set assists and eight digs. Omelan was second in the match with 13.5 points from her five aces, eight kills and one block assist, adding 10 digs.
Omelan's 10 digs were third on the team as
Jenesys Del Mar Moctezuma-Gonzalez (Bayamón, Puerto Rico/) had 11 and
Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) had a match-high 17. McGowan also was perfect in her attacks, going 3-for-3 in kills as two of them were uncontested overs, including one from distance after a bleacher-diving save from Santavy in the second set.
Gillian Dickerson (Frisco, TX/Wakeland) had a match-high 33 set assists. Nazareth's entire roster combined for 30. Dickerson tacked on 6.0 points from three kills and three aces and contributed seven digs. "We were so happy to snag our first home win of the season, especially against such a strong conference rival," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said. "Our serving and defense keep looking awesome, which really helps make everything else feel a lot easier."
The Saxons will next host Alfred State College in the Alfred Cup on Wednesday, October 7 at 6:00pm from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
