Women's Soccer Secures 3-1 Win Over SUNY Poly

UTICA, NY – Consistent scoring throughout the match propelled the Alfred University women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon.

"It was nice to get back in the win column," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We still have a lot of work to do moving forward, but it was great to get a win on the road."

The Saxons (2-6-3, 1-4-1 Empire 8) wasted little time finding the back of the net, as Ava Thayer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a shot to the left side of the net. Just moments later, Alfred University doubled its advantage following a breakaway opportunity. Mara Gloo (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) played the ball forward to Thayer, who headed the ball into the net for her second goal of the afternoon.
Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland) recorded her first save of the afternoon in the 34th minute, helping the Saxons carry a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

The Alfred University defense continued to hold strong early in the second half, successfully defending a pair of corner kick opportunities from the Wildcats (3-7-1, 0-5-0 Empire 8). SUNY Poly eventually cut into the deficit with a goal in the 82nd minute. With the match entering its final stages, Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) sent a ball forward to Aviana Petrizzo (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and secured the 3-1 victory for Alfred University.

The Saxons will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to No. 10 University of Rochester for a non-conference matchup at 5:00 PM.
