Saxons Hand Utica First E8 Loss of the Season in Five-Set Battle

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team snapped a five-match win streak for Utica University on Saturday afternoon, 3-2 on the road.

The Saxons (8-14, 2-2 Empire 8) also ended a four-match win streak for the Pioneers (8-12, 4-1 Empire 8) in conference play. The Pioneers beat Elmira College, Keuka College, SUNY Polytechnic Institute and Houghton University prior to their home loss to Alfred University. AU won the first two sets, lost the third and fourth and came away with a fifth set deciding win, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 15-12.

"What a fun road win in a tough conference matchup!" Head Coach Mike Honeycutt said. "Our defense really stepped up and carried us to the finish line. So many awesome plays today, especially Meeghan [Peterson] coming through in the clutch with an ace that no one could touch!"

The Saxons were led by Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) who had a match-high 22.5 points from 17 kills, four aces and three block assists. Julia Abbott (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) also had a match-high of 19 kills as she finished third in scoring with 19.5 points by adding an assisted block. Abigail Omelan (Tomball, TX/Tomball) also scored in double-digits and had more points than all but one Pioneer as she totaled 14.0 with 13 kills and an ace.

Five Saxons were in double digits with digs, led by Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) who had a team-high 17. Omelan was second with 15. Both Santavy and Gillian Dickerson (Frisco, TX/Wakeland) each contributed 13 attack stops and Jenesys Del Mar Moctezuma-Gonzalez (Bayamón, Puerto Rico/North Cobb) added 12.

Dickerson held more than double the set assist than any other player in the match, totaling 45 with Utica's top setter having 20.

Every single Saxon who stepped onto the court scored at least 0.5 points in the match.

The Saxons will next host Houghton University on Tuesday, October 13 for a 6:00pm Empire 8 match from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
