Keuka Park, NY - Despite a strong first half, the Alfred University men's basketball team fell to Keuka College in 73-62 fashion on Saturday.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led Alfred University with a team-high 17 points to go with four assists. Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) finished the game with a double-double performance that consisted of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Andria Siamashvili (Belgrade, Serbia/Rabun Gap Cacoochee School) added 10 points off the bench for AU.
Keuka College began the game on a 10-0 run to force AU to play from behind. The Saxons relied on seven consecutive points from Siamashvili to cut into their deficit with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Consecutive deep shots from Valenzuela and Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) had AU trailing by two points with seven minutes to go. Moments later, a three-point play by Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) gave Alfred University their first lead of the afternoon. Curran scored six points in the final two minutes, as the Saxons went into halftime with a 32-29 lead.
An early basket by Valenzuela opened scoring for AU in the second half. The Wolves responded with an 8-0 run to take back the lead with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The Saxons answered with seven points of their own to turn the matchup into a one-possession game with under 12 minutes to go. A layup from Valenzuela gave the lead back to AU with under nine minutes left in the game. The Wolves tied the game once again with roughly seven minutes to go, ultimately relying on seven points in the final minute of action to hold on for the win.
Alfred University will next compete at Utica University next Friday at 7:30 PM.
