ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to Empire 8 leader SUNY Geneseo by a score of 59-29 on Friday.
The Saxons (9-7, 3-4 Empire 8) were held to single digits in the first three quarters by the Knights (13-3, 7-0 Empire 8). AU scored 15 points in the fourth, but SUNY Geneseo's substantial lead remained out of reach.
Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) led the Saxons with 13 points on 4-of-12 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
AU faced a difficult offensive outing during the game, shooting only 9-of-47 (.191) overall from the field compared to SUNY Geneseo's 24-of-65 (.369). The Knights capitalized on the Saxons' turnovers, turning them into 23 of their points.
AU saved its best offensive performance for the final frame. Chest, Libby Benner (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) and
Ava Anastasi (Sanborn, NY/Starpoint) were the three lone Saxons to combine for the team's 15 points.
"Geneseo is a really good program that does what it does very well," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We struggled to shoot the ball again, but finally had better offensive flow in the fourth quarter and showed some life on that end. They pounded the ball inside relentlessly and kept the floor well-spaced at all times. We defended at a pretty high rate against a talented team, but a lack of communication and their offensive rebounding hurt us in big moments. Proud of us for staying strong and competing through till the end."
AU will next host SUNY Brockport for another E8 contest on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
