ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team hosted its first home match of the season, where it defeated Fredonia (0-2, 0-0 SUNYAC) by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday.
"Without two of our usual starters, the team did a great job of stepping up and getting a strong result," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "This was definitely a team win and I am very proud of how they came together and rose to the challenge. Looking forward to taking this energy into our next match this Friday when we take on Mount Aloysius at home."
The Saxons (1-1, 0-0 Empire 8) took the doubles point to start the match. The first-year team of
Camryn Moore (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central) and
Anastasia Shaw (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville) won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) was joined by
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) in another 6-0 victory at No. 2. 6-1
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) and
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) rounded it out with a 6-1 win at No. 1.
During singles, Windisch and Gits grabbed the first two wins to extend the Saxons' lead, 3-0. Windisch won at No. 3 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Gits registered her first career singles victory at No. 4 in a 6-3, 6-0 fashion. Epping earned a hard-fought victory at No. 2 singles. She won the first set 6-1 before dropping the second at the same score. Epping battled back with a 6-3 edge in the third to finish on a high note. Shaw and Moore joined Gits in registering their first collegiate singles wins. Shaw won at No. 6 by 6-0, 6-1, while Moore notched 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Alfred University women's tennis team remains at home as it hosts Mount Aloysius College on Friday at 3:00 PM.
