HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – The Alfred University women's volleyball team concluded the weekend with two matches at the Centenary Tri-Match on Saturday.
The Saxons (6-10, 0-0 Empire 8) met Hunter College (4-13, 1-1 CUNY) for the second time this season. AUVB lost to the Hawks by scores of 18-25, 15-25, 17-25. The Saxons rebounded with a win over the host team, Centenary University (8-6, 0-0 Atlantic East) at 25-15, 25-21, 25-23.
Match One
Hunter College – 3 / Alfred University – 0
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led AUVB with 8.0 points and registered six digs. Meanwhile,
Abigail Omelan (Tomball, TX/Tomball Memorial) contributed 6.0 points on four kills and two service aces.
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) added 5.0 points and collected four digs. In addition,
Julia Abbott (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) registered 4.5 points through three kills, a service ace and a block assist while
Cara Bratthauar (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) racked up 4.0 points. Setting up her teammates,
Delaney Sims (Bogart, GA/George Walton Academy) recorded 21 assists and five digs during the match.
Match Two
Alfred University – 3 / Centenary University – 0
Malone and Santavy were the two Saxons to score in double figures. Malone led the way with 17.0 points on 14 kills and a career-high three service aces. She also added eight digs to her stat line. Santavy tallied 13.0 points, all coming on 13 kills, which was one short of matching her career high.
Whitney Kilton (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) scored a career-high 7.5 points, matching her career-high six kills and notching the other two on two blocks. Sims finished with 5.5 points on three kills, two blocks and one service ace. She also tallied a career-high 38 assists and 10 digs.
In the third set, AUVB had a 7-2 lead in the early stages. Centenary University tied the match at eight-all on a 5-1 run. An error from the Cyclones and a Santavy kill brought the Saxons back up by two. But Centenary University tallied its next seven to jump in front, 15-11. Santavy hit a kill that ignited an 8-2 run that helped AUVB come back, 19-8. When the Cyclones made it 22-all, Santavy registered back-to-back kills to break the tie. The Saxons pulled out the win after a setting error by the host team.
"It was good to get a split this weekend and beat the host team on their court," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said.
AUVB begins Empire 8 play at Houghton University on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
