Saxons Open E8 Play With Loss to Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University football team came up short to St. John Fisher University as part of a 21-7 loss on Saturday.

"Obviously that was not the performance that we expected or wanted to see today from our football team," Head Coach Bob Rankl said. "We had a lot of opportunities to score and put points on the board, but unfortunately, we were not able to execute the way that we needed to today. As a coaching staff and as a football team, we all know that we need to hold ourselves accountable and perform better moving forward. We are excited to return home for Homecoming next week, and we need to lick our wounds and get right back to work."

St. John Fisher relied on a touchdown in their opening drive for the initial lead. The Cardinals capitalized following a turnover by the Saxons to extend their advantage, extending their advantage to 14-0. A long pass by Chris Kelly (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) to Jonye Rosebury Jr (Tampa, FL/Tampa Bay Tech) was followed by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Carmine Hoag (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca), as AU trailed 14-7 entering the second quarter. The Saxons put together a 16-play drive to begin the second quarter, but couldn't convert from the goal line on fourth down. Alfred University narrowly escaped avoided additional points by the Cardinals, as a field goal attempt went wide to the right to close out the first half.

The defense for AU stepped up to open the third quarter, as a fourth down tackle by TJ Marsh (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) gave the Saxons the ball in favorable field position. Alfred University got the ball within the opposing two-yard line, but didn't find the end zone on fourth down. St. John Fisher drove down to AU's 12-yard line, but a sack on third down by Jaedon Adjei (Rochester, NY/Webster Thomas) led to another missed field goal by the Cardinals. In the fourth quarter, a late touchdown by St. John Fisher was enough to distance the lead and come away with the win.

Alfred University will next host Hartwick College next Saturday with kickoff at 12:00 PM.
