ALBANY, NY - The Alfred University women's soccer team secured their first conference win of the fall season following a 2-0 effort against Russell Sage College on Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons (5-2-1, 1-0-1 Empire 8) relied on 10 corner kick opportunities against the Gators (2-5-0, 0-2-0 Empire 8), while registering nine shots on goal as part of their victory.
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) tallied one goal for Alfred University, marking her sixth goal of the fall season.
Zoey Wolf (Holley, NY/Holley) recorded her third goal of the fall.
Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) stepped up for the Saxons, picking up four saves and earning her 25th career shutout with Alfred University.
"The team played well and put forth a great effort," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "It was nice to get a win on the road."
The first half served as a defensive contest between both sides, as the Saxons held the Gators to just a pair of shot attempts across the first 30 minutes of action. Alfred University put together eight shots attempts to go with four corner kick opportunities, but were unable to convert before going into halftime with a scoreless draw.
Following four additional shot attempts to begin the second half, Young was fouled to set up a penalty kick opportunity. Young capitalized on the opportunity in the 69th minute, giving Alfred University the lead. Just three minutes later, a pass from
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) found its way to Wolf, who found the back of the net and extended the advantage for AU. Barnard-Pratt was credited with three saves to close out the game, as Alfred University came away with the win.
Alfred University will next host Nazareth University on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
