ALLIANCE, OH – The Alfred University women's volleyball team concluded the Mount Union Invitational with losses against Marietta College and DePauw University, both by 3-0, on Saturday.
In the first match, the Saxons (0-3, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to the Pioneers (3-0, 0-0 OAC) by set scores of 11-25, 20-25 and 18-25. Following that, the team lost to the Tigers (1-1, 0-0 NCAC) with scores of 13-25, 18-25 and 18-25.
Delaney Sims (Bograt, GA/George Walton Academy) was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
"It was a tough weekend versus very strong opponents," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said. "We knew that going in. I am very proud of our defensive efforts. Our serving was tough and will continue to get dialed in. We have work to do. But for our first weekend, there are plenty of positives."
Match One
Alfred University – 0 | Marietta College – 3
Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) was the leading scorer for the Saxons, finishing with 10.0 points on 10 kills along with seven digs.
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) registered 6.0 points on five kills and one service ace. In addition, she led the team with a game-high 12 digs.
Sims tallied 15 assists. She added 5.0 points on a season-high four kills and one solo block, followed by eight digs to her stat line.
Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) was second for the Saxons in digs as she matched her season-high 10.
Match Two
Alfred University – 0 | DePauw University – 3
Santavy again was the leader in points with 7.0 points on seven kills. She also tallied eight digs, one short of matching her career-high nine.
Malone was second on the team with 5.0 on four kills and one service ace, along with three digs.
Sims led the Saxons with a game-high 19 assists and 10 digs.
Cara Bratthauer (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) and
Jade Wolfer (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) each had 4.0 points apiece. Wolfer recorded a season-high three service aces.
The Alfred University women's volleyball team returns to New York State for the William Smith College Tournament on September 5-6. The Saxons will play their first game against Hamilton College on Friday, September 5, at 3:30 PM.
