Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to No. 24 Ithaca College

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to No. 24 nationally-ranked Ithaca College on Thursday afternoon from Harrington Field.

The Saxons (26-9, 16-4 Empire 8) fell to the Bombers (23-6, 9-3 Liberty League) in game one, 9-0 in six innings. They then dropped a seven-inning, 14-7 decision to the visitors in the nightcap, closing out the non-conference schedule.

Ithaca put up three runs in the top of the second inning and would go on to hand Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) only her second loss inside of the circle all season long.

The Saxon offense got back on track in game two, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first when Steward singled through the left side to bring home Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill). This was after Ithaca brought home three runs in the top of the inning.

Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) homered in the bottom of the third, putting two runs on the board with Vidal scoring on the play. She then brought home Vidal again in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 12-4 game off a single up the middle. Remm scored when Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) singled up the middle as well, making it a 12-5 Ithaca game.

Remm ended the Saxon scoring with a two RBI double to left center field that scored both Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) and Vidal. Remm totaled five RBI in the contest and two runs on a 3-for-4 performance.

The Saxons will next look to finalize their place in the Empire 8 Softball Championships with a road doubleheader at SUNY Poly on Saturday, May 3 at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
