ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University softball team began their final week of regular season competition with a 9-2 win against RIT on Tuesday afternoon.
"It was good to get at least one game in today and a little frustrating we couldn't get both," Head Coach
Luke Wesneski said. "I'm happy for us to get a win under our belts. There are a lot of things we need to clean up before we go into the conference tournament next week. We're looking forward to some really great practices this week and next to work on some things to ensure that we are playing our best softball heading into the tournament. We are really looking forward to a top 25 showdown on Thursday at home against Ithaca."
Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) got the start in the circle for Alfred University (26-7, 16-4 Empire 8), recording at least one strikeout in each of the first four innings of action. Steward finished the game with six strikeouts against the Tigers (10-23, 2-10 Liberty League) that resulted in her 18th win of the season. With the credited victory, Steward became the sixth player in program history to reach 18 or more wins in a single season for the Saxons.
After
Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) got on base to begin the game, an RBI double by
Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) gave Alfred University the initial lead. Later in the inning, Remm scored from second base to extend the advantage. In the following inning, Steward registered her second home run of the spring season, bringing home
Paris Guzman (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe). With runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, a single by Vidal had the Saxons leading in 6-0 fashion. Vidal later scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by Remm.
The Tigers tallied a pair of runs in the fifth inning, but the Saxons answered with an RBI double by Remm that allowed
Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) and
Brielle Wark (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) to cross home plate.
Prather did an excellent job in relief for Alfred University, retiring the final five batters to close out the game.
Alfred University and RIT attempted to complete the doubleheader, but the weather interrupted and ultimately cancelled the second leg of the outing in the fourth inning.
Alfred University will next host Ithaca College on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
