Saxons Celebrate Senior Day with Empire 8 Sweep of Keuka

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept Keuka College in Empire 8 action on Saturday and celebrated its four seniors on Saturday afternoon from Harrington Field.

"Overall it was a great day for our seniors as we celebrated with two wins," Head Coach Luke Wesneski said. I don't think the two wins were perfect by any means, but as a coach I always appreciate when one aspect of our game isn't perfect, another aspect of our game picks up. That's exactly what happened with our bats today. I was happy to see them figure some things out and make some adjustments and were able to score a lot of runs when we needed to, which is usually a recipe for a good day. Proud of the girls and looking forward to a busy week of softball."

The Saxons (25-7, 16-4 Empire 8) won both games with mercy-rule scores, winning game one in five innings, 13-3 and game two in six innings, 16-7. AU put up 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings of game two against the Wolves (5-26, 3-15 Empire 8). The wins were the Saxons' 12th and 13th victories this year that came in mercy-rule games.

In pregame ceremonies, the Saxons celebrated the careers of Ty Thomas (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook), Darby McEnery (Corona, CA/Norco), Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) and Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic). "I would like to give a shout-out to our four seniors," Assistant Coach Cassie Reed said."It's always a great day when we can come out and win two for them. This group has a special place in my heart as they were my first freshmen when I came in as a first year coach! It has been such an honor seeing them grow and I can't wait to see what they do in the future."

Game One – Five Innings
Alfred University  – 13 | Keuka College – 3

The first inning ended with both teams notched at 2-2. Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) drove in the first Saxon score in the bottom of the inning, sending Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) home on a double to left field. Whitmyer crossed home plate after McEnery was walked with bases loaded, tying the game, 2-2.

AU scored back-to-back innings with four runs each to take a large lead.

In the bottom of the second, Gatza singled through the left side of the Keuka defense to bring home Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill). Neto doubled to right center field to bring home Whitmyer for the 4-2 lead. Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) singled through the left side to bring both Gatza and Neto home, making it a 6-2 lead after two innings.

Keuka scored what would be its last run in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning, the Saxons started with a three-run home run from Remm to right field, almost into the Canacadea Creek, scoring Thomas and Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East), making it a 9-3 lead. Gatza followed with a solo home run to left field that landed on top of the Saxons' batting cage.

Vidal showed immense speed in the bottom of the fourth inning as she sent a long slap shot just out reach of the Keuka left fielder, who was creeping up on the lefty slap-batter. The ball rolled all the way to the corner of the outfield fence and bounced away from the fielder that proved just difficult enough for Vidal to round third base and score her first collegiate in-the-park home run. She earned three RBI as both Steward and Thomas scored on the play.

Steward picked up the win in the circle with seven strikeouts and four hits. Out of the 13 hits that the Saxons recorded, three were doubles and three were home runs. Remm neared an incredible achievement, as she went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and a home run, a single shy of hitting a cycle.

Game One – Six Innings
Alfred University  – 16 | Keuka College – 7

The Wolves searched for vengeance in the nightcap, getting out to an early 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. AU put one run on the board in the bottom of the inning as well as in the bottom of the third inning. Runs from Keuka added a run in the third and fifth to hold the 5-2 lead over AU. The Saxon bats woke up to combine for 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Remm scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to start the scoring spree. Neto sent Whitmyer home with a double to left center. Both her and Prather would each record three doubles in the contest. Paris Guzman (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe) singled through the left side to bring home Gatza and Neto. Prather's double sent home Brielle Wark (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Alexis Martinez (Anaheim, CA/Woodbridge) who almost caught Wark rounding third, showcasing her impressive speed as well. Prather scored when Vidal stole second base, giving her the chance to advance on the throw, making it a 9-5 Saxon lead. Keuka scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on bases-loaded walks.

In the bottom of the inning, Martinez doubled to right center to bring home Neto and Guzman, making it an 11-7 Saxon lead. AU drove in another two runs when Prather doubled again, bringing home Sabrina Diaz (West Palm Beach, FL/Forest Hill) and Martinez. AU clinched the early-inning victory when Remm mashed a ball to center field for the walk-off home run, bringing home Prater and Vidal for the nine-run lead victory, 16-7.

Loretta Sorochty (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame Batavia) picked up the win with four strikeouts. Steward pitched the last inning and struck out batters twice. Vidal had three stolen bases while Remm had two and Wark added one.

The Saxons will next enter their final stretch of the regular season. They face two non-conference opponents with RIT on Tuesday, April 29 and Ithaca College on Thursday May 1. They have one more Empire 8 doubleheader that was rescheduled after poor weather at SUNY Poly on May 3.
