Saxons Ground Soaring Eagles in E8 Sweep

HORSEHEADS, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept local Elmira College in a pair of road Empire 8 games on Friday evening.

The Saxons (23-7, 15-4 Empire 8) took a seven-inning, 10-1 victory in the first game against the Soaring Eagles (10-19-1, 7-9 Empire 8). They then earned a 6-1 win in the closing game.

Game One
Elmira College – 1 | Alfred University  – 10

The Saxons got on the scoreboard early with a Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) single through the left side of the Eagles' defense, sending Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) home for the 1-0 lead. Elmira tied the game with their only run of the game in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk. Vidal scored the game-winning run in the top of the third when Whitmyer sent a shot to the third base player, making it a 2-1 lead. Whitmyer scored when Paris Guzman (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe) picked up a sacrificed fly to center field.

The Saxons scored five more runs in the top of the fourth and added another two in the seventh. AU out-hit Elmira, 12-3 with all 12 hits being singles. Vidal totaled three stolen bases in the game, accompanied by Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) and her single stolen base.

Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) picked up her 16th win with only three hits given up while striking out seven batters.

Game Two
Elmira College – 1 | Alfred University  – 6

The Saxons had a breakout scoring spree in the top of the second inning when Ally Boulger (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) had the first double of the day, sending Neto home for the opening run. Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) would drive in the game-winning run when she had a two-RBI single through the right side that sent Guzman and Boulger home for the 3-0 lead. Prather scored on the first triple of the day, as Alexis Martinez (Anaheim, CA/Woodbridge) sent a shot down the left field line.

Whitmyer added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning when she homered to left field to bring home Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) for the 6-0 lead. Whitmyer now has seven homers on the season as AU has a 22-6 lead over opponents.

Loretta Sorochty (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame Batavia) picked up the win inside of the circle, giving up only five hits while striking out batters twice.

The Saxons will next host Senior Day on Saturday, April 26 against Keuka College. The first Empire 8 match-up will begin at 1:00pm at Harrington Field.
