ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse program matched a program record with their fifth consecutive win following an 18-5 victory against Keuka College.
The Saxons (5-4, 2-0 Empire 8) registered a season-high 29 shots on goal against the Wolves (4-3, 1-1 Empire 8), while recording a season-best 27 caused turnovers as part of the win.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with a team-high seven points from five goals and a pair of assists.
Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) finished the game with four goals to go with an assist.
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) added three goals and two assists for AU.
"It is great to get this conference win," Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "This is the first time in a long time we've had two conference wins to start off conference play. That and the five-game win streak have been awesome accomplishments so far. It's been fun to work with our group of girls who aim to get better every single day. We played well as a team today to clear and ride, and did a good job of cleaning up defensive play to avoid penalties. Offensively, we moved the ball well, which paid off as we have seven people in the scoring column."
The Wolves were the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter, but the Saxons answered with consecutive goals from Bedette to take their first lead of the evening. A late goal from
Cassidy Primrose (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) gave AU a 3-1 advantage entering the second quarter. Booth extended the lead for Alfred University within the first minute of action in the second quarter.
Sydney Angelo (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) scored back-to-back goals for AU to further the advantage. Keuka scored once more before Booth tallied her second goal of the evening during a man-up situation. Goals from Bedette,
Jessica Matson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) and
Paige Stansfield (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) across the final five minutes of the first half gave Alfred University a 10-2 lead going into halftime.
A quick man-up goal from Primrose sparked the AU offense to begin the second half. A third goal from Booth gave the Saxons their first double-digit advantage of the contest. The Wolves scored twice in the third quarter, but Booth and Rinker combined for three straight goals, as Alfred University was ahead 15-4 with one quarter remaining. Booth continued her scoring efforts in the final quarter, scoring at the 13:43 mark. Keuka scored once more, but consecutive goals from Rinker was enough for AU to come away with the victory.
Alfred University will next travel to face St. John Fisher University on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
