Saxons Extend Winning Streak With 12-11 Victory Against Allegheny

MEADVILLE, PA - The Alfred University women's lacrosse team wrapped up non-conference competition with a competitive 12-11 win against Allegheny College on Saturday.

The Saxons (4-4, 2-0 Empire) registered 23 caused turnovers against the Gators (2-7, 1-1 PAC) as part of their winning efforts. The four-game winning streak for Alfred University marks the first for the program dating back to the 2002 season.

"We had watched a lot of film of this team since we originally prepared to play them in our season opener," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "We felt ready and started the game really hot. It got a little nerve racking when we went cold in the third quarter and found ourselves in penalty trouble. We did a great job persevering down the stretch and were able to find our groove and composure again offensively to finish the game and come away with the win."

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with a team-high seven goals to go with an assist. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) recorded one goal and one assist. Molly Howlett (Brockport, NY/Brockport) tallied nine saves for AU.

The Saxons relied on a free position goal from Booth within the first minute of action for the initial lead. The Gators evened the game moments later, but Booth was responsible for each of the next two goals for Alfred University. Allegheny scored once more before Paige Stansfield (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) recorded her ninth goal of the spring season. The Gators scored in the closing moments of the first quarter, but the Saxons were ahead 4-3 going into the second quarter.

Allegheny tied the game in the opening stages of the second quarter, but a goal from Cassidy Primrose (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) gave the advantage back to AU. Goals from Booth, Bedette and Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) extended the lead for the Saxons. The Gators found the back of the net before the end of the first half, but a goal from Booth offset the damage, as the Saxons went into halftime with a 9-5 lead.

The Gators relied on four consecutive goals in the third quarter to tie the game. Booth scored two straight goals for Alfred University to begin the final quarter of regulation. Moments later, Booth dished an assist to Jessica Matson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley). The Gators scored twice in the final five minutes of action, but the Saxons were able to hold on for the win.

Alfred University will next return to Empire competition in a home game against Keuka College on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
