ELMIRA, NY - A strong outing from the Alfred University women's lacrosse team resulted in a 17-1 win over Elmira College on Friday evening.
The Saxons (3-4, 1-0 Empire 8) picked up their first win against the Soaring Eagles (0-4) dating back to the 2008 season. AU relied on scoring in all four quarters, while picking up 27 ground balls as part of their win.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with a game-high eight points from six goals and a pair of assists.
Anna Priebe (Palmyra, NY/Pal-Mac) finished the game with two goals and two assists.
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) added three goals and an assist for AU.
"We did a good job of gaining possession off the draw, limiting our turnovers, and getting the ball back on rides and defensively," Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "I'm proud of the way we composed ourselves offensively to take time and make the most of each possession. We played to our level and got better today, which was a big goal."
The Saxons set the tone in the opening quarter after Booth scored within the first two minutes of action. An assist from
Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) to Priebe extended the lead for AU. The Saxons relied on goals from Bedette, Priebe and Rinker within a four-minute span to further the advantage for Alfred University.
Cassidy Primrose (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) got involved on the offensive end, finding the back of the net at the 3:43 mark of the first quarter. Goals from Bedette and Booth had AU leading 8-0 going into the second quarter.
Paige Stansfield (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) scored her eighth goal of the spring season within the first minute of the second quarter. Later in the quarter, a goal from Bedette gave Alfred University a double-digit advantage. Booth scored the final two goals of the first half for AU, who led 12-0 going into halftime.
Jessica Matson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) tallied her third goal of the season at the 13:08 mark of the third quarter. Elmira scored their first goal of the evening, but AU was still ahead 13-1 with one quarter remaining. Booth continued to find success on the offensive end in the final quarter, recording her fifth goal of the game within the first three minutes of play. Booth, along with
Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor) and
Darby Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy), all scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation as AU came away with the victory.
Alfred University will next travel to face Allegheny College in a non-conference outing on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
