HOUGHTON, NY - The Alfred University baseball team continued their season with a pair of non-conference losses to Hilbert College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saxons (2-10, 0-0 Empire 8) lost the first game 7-1, while dropping the second game in 13-6 fashion.
Game 1
Zachary Haggerty (Hollywood, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) made his third appearance of the spring season on the mound for Alfred University. The first-year pitcher tallied a pair of strikeouts across 3.2 innings of action.
Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) saw time on the mound for the final 3.1 innings for AU, recording a strikeout.
The Hawks relied on four runs across the four innings of play for the initial lead. The lone run for Alfred University came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a single from
Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School) allowed
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) to cross home plate. Despite holding Hilbert scoreless in both the fifth and sixth innings, AU did not score again prior to the end of the first leg of the doubleheader.
Game 2
Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA/International Studies Learning Center) got the initial nod for the Saxons on the mound, but Alfred University relied on five total pitchers to finish the afternoon.
An RBI single by
Noah Madueno (Florence, AZ/Florence) brought home
Brayden Bedingfield (Sea Brook, TX/Clear Falls) in the bottom of the first inning gave AU the initial advantage. The Hawks responded with 11 straight runs of their own before an RBI double by Bedingfield in the fifth inning cut into Alfred University's deficit. Later in the inning,
CJ Elizondo (Laredo, TX/Nixon) knocked an RBI single to left field to bring in
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic). Both
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and Bedingfield crossed home plate in the sixth inning, but the deficit was too much to overcome for the Saxons.
Alfred University will next begin Empire 8 competition against Houghton University on Friday with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.
