Box Score 2 HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC -- The Alfred University men's tennis team took part in two matches on Thursday to show their early-season strengths and abilities.
Match One
Rescheduled from Monday, the morning session against Baldwin Wallace University had plenty to like despite the 6-1 loss.
"They were a great team and they showed it," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "This was a great test for us and it was a nice opportunity for our guys to be pushed out of their comfort zone. I want to give a special shout-out to our exhibition singles
Tristan Duhan (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca). He is the glue of our team and was able to record his first singles win. We are very proud of him and how hard our guys fought in each and every match."
Aside from Duhan's win,
Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) recorded his own singles win. It came down to the wire in a thrilling three-set match. Janik wound up on top with the scores being 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
Mark Ungurian (Choromorsk, Ukraine/School #6) fought hard in his singles match, winning several key games within the set. He was able to keep it close before falling 6-2, 6-3.
Match Two
The originally-scheduled match against St. Mary's College from Maryland took place in the evening. The Saxons fell once again but had more good things to take away.
"Today was an absolute battle and as we are about to begin conference play, these experiences will help us later in the season," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "
Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) and
Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Christian) did a great job of fighting the elements, injuries, and their opponents to get a big win in doubles.
Bill Tran (Hanoi, Vietnam/Grace Christian) did a great job of playing very smart tennis and maximizing his strengths to get the win in singles. Overall, I was proud of the fight and we are looking forward to tomorrow!"
Tran's win came in two sets which both finished 6-4. He was the lone Saxon to get the singles win but had two teammates get very close themselves.
George K. Fearon (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs) forced his opponent to get to 7-5 in the second set. Meanwhile,
Matthew Bittel (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) took his match three sets after rebounding in the second set to win 6-4.
The Saxons have one more match in South Carolina before heading back to New York against Franciscan University Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
