Women's Lacrosse Opens 2025 Season With Overtime Loss to Potsdam

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team opened their 2025 season with a 12-11 overtime loss to SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.

During halftime, Alfred University Athletics took time to recognize the alumnae who made the trip to support the Saxons as part of their 30-year anniversary as a varsity program.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with three goals, two assists and eight draw controls. Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) finished the game with five points from three goals and a pair of assists. Cassidy Primrose (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) recorded her first goal and assist of the spring season, while being credited with a team-high six caused turnovers.

"We showed a lot of grit and toughness throughout the game," Head Coach Julie Decker said. "I'm proud of the way we battled and gave it our all until the very end. Sadly, it didn't end the way we wanted, but we will learn from it and keep moving forward with our eyes set on our next opponent."

Potsdam (1-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) was the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter, but a pass from Anna Priebe (Palmyra, NY/Pal-Mac) to Bedette equalized the score. The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) held the Bears without a shot on goal across the final 10 minutes of the first quarter, as both sides entered the second quarter with a 1-1 tie. Bedette found the back of the net in the second quarter following a free position attempt to give AU their first lead of the afternoon. Additional goals from Booth and Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) extended the advantage for AU. Potsdam responded with four straight goals before Alescia Nitti (Brewster, NY/Brewster) tied the game once again for Alfred University at the 3:30 mark. The Bears scored once more before the end of the half, as the Saxons went into the break trailing in 6-5 fashion.

Booth opened scoring in the second half for AU at the 12:34 mark. Potsdam answered with back-to-back goals before Bedette cut the deficit in half for Alfred University. The Bears scored twice more in the third quarter, but newcomers Darby Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) and Paige Stansfield (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) each scored for AU, who were behind 10-9 entering the final quarter of regulation. The Bears scored roughly halfway through the fourth quarter, but a goal from Primrose was followed by a free position goal by Booth at the 1:09 mark to tie the game and ultimately force overtime. However, the Bears gained early possession in overtime and scored to come away with the win.

Alfred University will next host Fredonia on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
