ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's lacrosse team continued their spring season with a 19-10 loss to Fredonia on Wednesday night from Yunevich Stadium.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led Alfred University with five points from five goals and an assist, while being credited with three draw controls.
Anna Priebe (Palmyra, NY/Pal-Mac) finished the game with four goals while dishing an assist.
Molly Howlett (Brockport, NY/Brockport) recorded seven saves for the Saxons.
"We got dominated in the draw control battle and that really hurt us," Head Coach
Julie Decker said. "I think Fredonia's physical style of play got to us a bit and that is something we can't let happen. Possession is key, and we've got to be able to take care of the ball and finish."
The Blue Devils (1-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) opened the game with three consecutive goals, forcing the Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) to play from behind. Goals from Booth and
Megan Rinker (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) cut the deficit for AU. Fredonia answered with three more goals before entering the second quarter with a 6-2 lead. The lone goal for Alfred University in the second quarter came from
Paige Stansfield (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post), but the Saxons were still behind 13-3 going into halftime.
Priebe scored twice for the Saxons in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils retaliated with two goals of their own to maintain a 10-goal advantage going into the final quarter of action. Booth and Priebe combined for all five AU goals in the fourth quarter, but Fredonia was able to hold onto their late lead and come away with the win.
Alfred University will next pack their bags and head to California as part of their Spring Break trip, as they take on Cal-Lutheran on Saturday at 2:00 PM EST.
