LANCASTER, PA -- The Alfred University men's rugby team played three matches in the Frostbite 7's Tournament to open its spring season. The Saxons walked away with two wins in three matches played.
"It was a great day of rugby for the team," Head Coach
Dale Russell said. "We got our first win in program history and everyone got better as the day went on. The team is looking to carry the momentum into our tournament next week at IUP."
The first program win would come in the morning session against Bloomsburg B in a dominant 28-5 showing. AU dropped the afternoon match to Colgate being edged out 17-14. But the Saxons rebounded in the evening match up against Scranton B with a 12-5 win.Â
Edward Hart IV (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) led the way with four tries across the three matches. Four other Saxons had one successful try. These were
Nathan Towne (Ellenville, NY/Ellenville Jr/Sr),
Hector De La Rosa (Williamson, NY/Sodus),
Gabe Simone (Acton, MA/Landmark), and
Chevon Adriaans (Paramaribo, Suriname/SGS).Â
Adriaans added on seven tries throughout the day as well. This helped extend the advantages in the two wins, and kept it close against Colgate in the afternoon.
AU will head back South to play Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the IUP 7's Tournament on March 8.
